SAHARA MASONRY WATERPROOFER S5-14 4275
DESCRIPTION:
SAHARA MASONRY WATERPROOFER is a premium grade, flat, waterproof coating for use over all types of masonry surfaces. It protects, resurfaces and decorates in one coat. SAHARA MASONRY WATERPROOFER is alkali, fume and blister resistant. SAHARA MASONRY WATERPROOFER can be used on new or previously painted concrete, cement block, brick and stucco. It may be applied over slightly damp surfaces. Application may be by brush or roller, not recommended for airless spray application. DO NOT use SAHARA MASONRY WATERPROOFER as a finish coat for swimming pools, floor applications, cisterns or water reservoirs.
Surface preparation and surface repair are the most important requirements for maximum durability from any paint system. The first step should always be a thorough examination of the surface to be painted, checking for peeling and faded paint, dirt, chalking, grease, cracking, bare areas, mildew, rust, and structural problems. All surfaces, whether painted or unpainted, must be clean, free from gloss, and in sound condition prior to finishing.
GENERAL:
Remove dirt, grease, oil and chalk by washing with a detergent solution, TSP (Tri-Sodium Phosphate) or commercial cleaner recommended for cleaning masonry surfaces using a sponge or brush. If efflorescence or cement dust is present it must first be removed by mechanical means such as wire brushing. Surfaces that have shown signs of efflorescence should be neutralized using either distilled white vinegar or a 10% solution of muriatic acid. Additionally, glazed slick masonry or smooth troweled surfaces MUST be acid etched or sandblasted. If acid etching, use 10% solution of muriatic acid. CAUTION! WHEN USING MURIATIC ACID ALWAYS READ AND FOLLOW THE MANUFACTURER'S DIRECTIONS AND USE THE PROPER PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT AND OR APPAREL. After washing or etching, thoroughly rinse and flush with clean water and allow to dry. Power-washing is also a fast, effective method of removing dirt, chalk, etc. If a power-washer is used, follow the manufacture's recommendations and warnings.
See "Surface Preparation Guide" in the Product Information Manual for additional information.
Allow masonry to cure 30 days prior to painting.
Previously Coated Masonry
:Maintenance painting will frequently not permit complete removal of all old coatings prior to repainting a particular surface. Recognize that any surface preparation, short of removal of all old coatings, may compromise the service life of the new coating system. Check compatibility of previously painted surfaces using a test patch with the coating if there is any doubt on recoatability.
Masonry-Poured and Prestressed Concrete:
Coating uniformity will depend on smoothness and workmanship of the concrete. Fill all pits, air holes and point up large voids, cracks and other imperfections with SAHARA WATERPROOF MASONRY PATCH. SAHARA MASONRY WATERPROOFER can be applied on damp surfaces. Remove dust, dirt and excess mortar with a stiff brush. Pressure leaks must be patched with SAHARA WATERPROOF MASONRY PATCH.
Blocks (Concrete-Haydite-Aggregate):
Be sure surface is clean and free of mud, dirt dust or other foreign matter.
S5-14
Mildew:
Spotty patches that look like dirt, but do not come off when scrubbed with detergent solution, are probably mildew. It can be identified from other forms of discoloration by applying a few drops of bleach. If mildew is present, the black, gray or brown color will bleach out and disappear within one or two minutes. Mildew must be killed and removed before repainting. Where mildew is present, apply a solution of one part household bleach and three parts water, or use a commercial mildew remover. It is mandatory to wear rubber gloves, goggles, long-sleeved shirt and long pants to protect eyes and skin when using mildew remover. In addition, protect grass, trees and shrubs with plastic covers. CAUTION! DO NOT MIX BLEACH WITH AMMONIA OR DETERGENTS CONTAINING AMMONIA. Follow specific instructions if a commercial mildew remover is used.
RECOMMENDED TOPCOATS:
SAHARA MASONRY WATERPROOFER may be topcoated with conventional architectural coatings, such as latex finishes, where conditions permit. SAHARA MASONRY WATERPROOFER may be topcoated with polyamide-cured epoxy finishes where high moisture conditions demand the extra protection of these types of coatings, i.e. masonry shower stalls. DO NOT use SAHARA MASONRY WATERPROOFER as a finish coat for swimming pools, floor applications, cisterns or water reservoirs.
Stir thoroughly before using. Apply as packaged, no thinning required. ASK YOUR DEALER TO PLACE ON SHAKER FOR EXCELLENT EASE IN APPLICATION OF THIS HEAVY BODIED COATING.
Apply unthinned with a stiff bristle brush. Work material into voids. Two coats may be required for good filling of more porous substrates. Apply with straight strokes. Roller application is not recommended for rough, irregular surfaces. Roller application can be used on large smooth areas. Use a 3/8 or 1/2 inch synthetic roller cover, followed by "back brushing" to force material into hairline cracks and voids in the surface.
Clean brushes and equipment with mineral spirits. Dispose of unused paint and waste in accordance with local, state and federal regulations.
Warranted waterproof results require 10 mils paint film thickness. For maximum protection apply on rough porous surface 75 sq. ft. per gallon (7 square meters per 3.785 liters). On hard smooth surface up to 125 sq. ft. per gallon (11-12 square meters per 3.785 liters). Recommended for interior (above and below grade) and exterior (above grade) use.
Optimum drying conditions are 60° F. to 90° F. (16° C. to 32° C.) at 50% R.H.
